Martha Hughes Cannon, the Suffragist Senator

  • Pioneer Courthouse 97 E. St. George Blvd St. George, UT 84770 (map)

Join Better Days and the Washington County Historical Society for an evening of learning about Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon - frontier doctor, suffragist, public health advocate, and the nation’s first female state senator! Martha beat her husband Angus (who was St. George’s first mayor) in the 1896 election for state senate and made history, but that’s only one part of her story. Come hear about the triumph and tragedy that shaped her life.

You can also see Martha’s mini statue and exhibit ahead of her statue’s installation in the U.S. Capitol, from October 17-20.
